According to the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), civil aviation contributes 2% of the world's CO2 emissions. With the anticipated growth in air traffic over the coming decades, this number could well increase.
As a leading manufacturer, we actively support our industry by playing a key role in developing greener technologies and more efficient aircraft. We also help customers find more cost-effective ways of operating their aircraft.
Through our multiple industry partnerships, we are defining more efficient aviation infrastructures. Spearheading the creation of a business aviation position statement focused on greenhouse gas emission reductions also figures among our recent accomplishments.
Commercial Aircraft
Under the leadership of the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Airports Council International (ACI), the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) and the International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Associations (ICCAIA), the aerospace industry has committed to reducing its emissions.
At a high-level meeting on International Aviation and Climate Change held in Montreal in October 2009, the industry adopted the following ambitious targets for commercial aircraft:
- A cap on aviation CO2 emissions starting in 2020 (carbon-neutral growth)
- An average improvement in fuel efficiency of 1.5% per year from 2009 to 2020
- A reduction in CO2 emissions of 50% by 2050 relative to 2005 levels
No other industry has made such a commitment at a global level.
Business Aircraft
Business aviation improved its fuel efficiency by 40% over the past 40 years and today contributes only 0.04% of total CO2 emissions. On November 24, 2009, GAMA and IBAC issued a press release announcing the climate change commitment of the global business aviation community. In this announcement, Bombardier was recognized for its leadership and strong technical support during the development of this important initiative.
The agreed position statement for business aviation includes:
- Achieving carbon-neutral growth by 2020
- Improving fuel efficiency by 2% per year from today until 2020
- Reducing CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050, relative to 2005
